The Lagos state government staff bus driver who collided with a moving train in the state’s Ikeja area on Thursday has urged the victims of the crash to forgive him.

This is coming after one of the survivors of the crash, identified simply as Titilayo, while recounting the events leading up to the collision, said in a conversation with reporters that they pleaded with the bus driver to wait for the train to pass, but he refused.

Another survivor said the 44-year-old driver, Oluwaseun Osinbajo, put on his earphones while driving and ignored orders from the railway’s signal officers.

According to new reports, the driver has been transferred to the state’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Branch, while up to seven people have been confirmed dead and others injured in the accident are currently being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

The driver, who works with the Lagos State Ministry of Transport, shared his version of what happened on that fateful day, blaming a mechanical failure in the bus for the incident.

“It was not my fault. How could I have ignored warning signs? The bus had a mechanical fault. It is a pity this has happened. I beg everyone affected to please forgive me in the name of God.” The Vanguard newspaper quoted him as saying.
